Hamstring and thigh pain · Ponsonby
Hamstring pain treatment for the ache that keeps coming back
Two hamstring problems end up in our clinic regularly. The first is a recurring hamstring strain that heals enough to get you back to running, then goes again in the same spot. The second is proximal hamstring tendinopathy: a deep, persistent ache near the sit bone that worsens when sitting, going upstairs or sprinting. Both are frustrating because they do not respond to stretching, and rest without the right treatment just delays the next flare.
Does this sound like you?
- ✓ A deep ache in the upper hamstring, near the sit bone, that worsens after sitting
- ✓ Hamstring strains that recur in the same spot during sport
- ✓ Pain at the back of the thigh that does not improve with stretching alone
- ✓ Stiffness or tightness that has been there for months
If that sounds like you, this is exactly what we treat. Book an assessment and we will confirm the right plan.
Why hamstring problems linger
The hamstring tendon at the top (where it attaches to the sit bone) has poor blood supply and is under sustained load during running, cycling and prolonged sitting. That combination makes it slow to heal without targeted treatment. Recurring strains often reflect a strength deficit or motor-control issue that was not properly addressed after the original injury.
How we treat hamstring pain
We assess the site and nature of the problem first: proximal tendinopathy, a mid-belly strain and referred pain from the lower back each need a different approach. For hamstring tendon problems, shockwave stimulates repair where blood supply is limited. We pair it with a graded loading programme, adjusted to your level and your sport, to build a hamstring robust enough that it does not go again.
Getting back to full function
The goal is not just pain reduction. We are direct about timelines and what you can do between sessions, so you can stay as active as possible during recovery.
This is one of the injuries we treat with shockwave therapy at our Ponsonby clinic. Read more about how shockwave works, who it suits and what a course of treatment involves.
